The Brushes tab is usually located in the bottom half of this panel. If you do not see a Layers panel, go to Windows>Recently Closed Docs>Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo to reopen this panel. * Some of these brushes are extremely large approaching 500 px wide, so the detail is about as high res as i could get it. Turning any map into a hex map with GIMP There are a number of programms out there that allow you to make a hex map out of hex tiles. While they certainly work better than painting with round fuzzy brushes, it wasn't entirely what i wanted, and i mostly turned to copy/pasting real elevation into my map. I found them on However, the actual brushes come from a deviantArt page, which offers those same brushes, and an expansion pack. These were carefully created from real elevation data. While I was google-hopping today, I ran across a photoshop tute website that offers a download of some tolkienesque mountain brushes. When tackling the problem of creating a realistic elevation map, i tried first to make a set of brushes that i could use to paint in elevation with.
